Did You Know PRINCE Was Vegan?

posted in: Vegan News 1

Prince was many things... singer, song writer, philanthropist and yes, Prince was vegan too!  Sadly we did not know this until today.  He didn't shout to the rooftops about it but then being a Jehovah's Witness he never touted any of his good deeds of which we are learning there were MANY!  And yet he wasn't afraid to speak his mind and advocate for animals either.

According to those who knew him well Prince's entire being was made of music.  And so it is fitting that he would lay out the reasons why animals are not ours to eat in a song called "Animal Kingdom" which he donated to PETA to use for a musical invitation to their 20th anniversary gala.  He included it in a later edition of the "Crystal Ball" boxed set.

Animal Kingdom

I saw a friend of mine today
In an ad sayin', what would do my body good
I told him he was wasting time, I say
If God wanted milk in me
The breast I suck would have a line around the hood

No member of the animal kingdom nurses past maturity
No member of the animal kingdom ever did a thing to me
It's why I don't eat red meat or white fish
Don't give me no blue cheese
We're all members of the animal kingdom
Leave your brothers and sisters in the sea

Animal, animal kingdom
Animal, animal kingdom

Who told us we should eat the swine?
You can bet your final money, it damn sure wasn't no friend of mine
What about the clams on the shore?
Souls in progress, here come the fisherman, soul no more
No member of the animal kingdom nurses past maturity
   (Nurses past, oh, yeah)
No member of the animal kingdom ever did a thing to me
   (Ever did a damn thing)

So, I don't eat no red meat or white fish
Or funky, funky blue cheese
We're all members of the animal kingdom
Leave your brothers and sisters in the sea

The Truth

Prince also steadfastly refused to wear animal products.  He went so far as to wear a "vegan wool" jacked on the cover of "Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic" and contacted PETA for information on the wool industry to put into the album's liner jacket.  Here's what he wrote...

If this jacket were real wool, it would have taken 7 lambs whose lives would have begun like this … Within weeks of their birth, their ears would have been hole-punched, their tails chopped off and the males would have been castrated while fully conscious. Xtremely high rates of mortality r considered normal: 20 2 40% of lambs die b4 the age of 8 weeks: 8 million mature sheep die every year from disease, xposure or neglect. Many people believe shearing helps animals who would otherwise b 2 hot. But in order 2 avoid losing any wool, ranchers shear sheep b4 they would naturally shed their winter coats, resulting in millions of sheep deaths from xposure 2 the cold.

Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic

This guy was a genius outside the music industry too.  He has been quoted, quite famously, saying "We need an Animal Rights Day when all slaughterhouses shut down!"  We wish this idea of his had gotten more traction.

When asked why he cared so much about animals when there was so much human suffering in the world he would tell folks that "Compassion is an action word with no boundaries."

And if that's not enough proof that Prince was vegan for you, whenever he was asked about his veganism he would tell folks he "didn't eat anything with parents" because "Thou shalt not kill’ means just that!"

R.I.P. Sweet Prince!  You will be missed but not forgotten.

False. At least at the time of his death, Prince was NOT a vegan according to his personal chef.
