Vegan Pantry 101

vegan-pantryLearning how to stock a vegan pantry is a necessary skill if you are going “Get The Meat Out” of your diet.

And it’s not as daunting a task as you may think if you already do a bit of cooking.  (Cooking as opposed to heating processed foods)

In fact you may find you have a great many of the things on this list already in your cupboard.  As well as a quiet a few things not listed, such as spices.

Now for those of you confused about why I’m making a simple list of things to include in a vegan’s pantry…  Well, you were new to this once too, and not everyone has someone else to tell them what is and isn’t okay!

Some people are new to cooking, and are wanting to start off their pantry ethically!  You just never know, so I put this basic list together.

Even experienced vegan’s can give it a once over, maybe you’ll find something new to try!  I know when I was thinking of all this stuff, I remembered and found things I hadn’t thought about in awhile.

Now a bit of warning!
This is a list of PANTRY ITEMS. 

You know, the dry or canned stuff that keeps forever, forgotten in the back of your pantry.  LOL

Not the fruits and veggies that you’ll get fresh and keep in the fridge and or freezer.  We’ll talk more about them on our “Vegan Food List”.

Without further ado here’s my list for  how to stock a pantry, vegan style, from scratch that gives you a lot of flexibility in what types of foods you’ll be able to make.

  • Whole wheat flour
  • Spelt flour
  • Rice Flour
  • Whole wheat noodles  (better still Black Bean Noodles)
  • Flax meal (seeds if you plan to grind your own)
  • Chia Seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Sesame seeds
  • Walnuts
  • Raw almonds
  • Raw cashews
  • Lentils
  • Split peas
  • Oat groats
  • Wheat berries
  • Beans dry
  • Beans canned (the more kinds the better)
  • Chickpeas canned and dry
  • Quinoa
  • Wild and brown rice
  • Barley
  • Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
  • Pasta sauce
  • Tomato sauce
  • Tomato paste
  • Vegetable stock
  • Vegetable bouillon (low or no salt)
  • Mushroom base (low or no salt)
  • Whole wheat tortillas
  • Corn tortillas
  • Chili powder
  • Curry powder
  • Mrs Dash (or equivalent)
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Ginger
  • Coconut oil
  • Raw apple cider vinegar
  • Other vinegars
  • Miso
  • Tamari
  • Tahini
  • Peanut butter (natural)
  • Beet or Raw sugar
  • Stevia
  • Maple Syrup
  • Agave Nectar
  • Sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • Nutritional yeast

Stocking Your Vegan Pantry Isn’t Stocking A Vegan Pantry Brown RiceHard!

Remember, this list is by no means exhaustive and you certainly don’t have to run out and buy everything on it to get your vegan diet started.  But I hope it’s helped you to put your thinking caps on and gotten your creative juices flowing.

See, learning how to stock a vegan pantry isn’t hard.  It just requires you to think outside the box a bit.

And I know I say this a lot, but it is so incredibly true. When you remove all the things you don’t want to eat from your kitchen.  Then enter it with an open mind and a sense of playful exploration MAGIC happens.  You’ll discover food and flavor combinations that will blow your mind.
