You Will NOT Believe What This Vegan Gelato Is Made Of!

Fermented Beans!  That is what the new vegan gelato, called BiotaGelata, is made of.  Don't turn your nose up at it just yet.  This tasty treat is full of protein and nutrients, lower in calories than standard gelato and sourced from local ingredients.​  On top of all that this new bean sensation seriously impressed a very hard to please audience in its debut.

Ok, technically this vegan gelato is made from "pulses".  Don't know what pulses are?  Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, neither did we.  Turns out the dried seed of a legume is called a pulse.  So all the standard dried "beans" you are used to eating like chickpeas, lentils, peas and peanuts are all pulses.

And no, before you ask, we don't know which exact "pulse" these crafty Canadian boys made their new frozen treat out of.  They are keeping that a secret for now.​

The founders created this dairy-free gelato for a competition that took place just last month hosted by Pulse Canada, the national industry association for pulse crops. Chair of the Alberta Pulse Growers Allison Ammeter gave the company a great review, stating:

"I never cease to be amazed at the unique ways that pulses can be processed into yummy food. If you had given me that gelato in a blind taste test, I would have said, ‘It’s a milk product.’ That gelato was incredible."

The founders were inspired to create BiotaGelata after they worked at a gelato company over the summer. The product is made with fermented beans that are then mixed in the gelato machine along with the rest of the ingredients, to create the final product--which the team has in maple walnut, passion fruit, and dark chocolate cassis.

Even though Pulse Canada usually only sends the winner of their competition onto the Institute of Food Technologists' Annual Meeting and Food Expo, BiotaGelata impressed the judges so much they are making an exception and are sending them along with the first place winners this year.  So they'll be showing off their stuff for potential investors in Chicago this summer.

We sure hope they get the backing they need to bring this delicious vegan gelato to markets near us all as soon as possible!

    I SO don’t believe you didn’t know what ‘pulses’ were – it’s like saying you don’t know what a ‘carb’ is… in otherwords, it’s a commonly used word amongst anyone who has any interest in what they’re eating. A tad patronising to pretend otherwise….

    Had to get that off my chest, sorry! Gelato looks great, thanks for spreading the word 🙂

      LOL We are sorry our ignorance insulted you. It was in fact, IGNORANCE. This is not a commonly used word in ANY of the states we have collectively lived in over the years. Rest assured we have now been thoroughly educated as to the nature of pulses. But what is this “carb” you speak of?
